Wrought Iron Two Story Porch on a Restoration Project of a building built in 1900
in Downtown Opelika, Alabama:
200 Eighth Street, Alabama., Client: Race Cannon
The restoration of this historic brick building built in 1900 by the current owners grandfather. The design follows the historic guidelines of the City of Opelika. In fact his uncles law office still exist on the second floor completely restored with its original furnishings. The original storefront is to be replaced, reinforcing the masonry structure with brick, steel and concrete block.
At on time several buildings in Opelika had two story metal porches, similar the ones in New Orleans. A tornado in 1947 destroyed most of these.
This wrought iron porch was constructed from cast iron parts fabricated at the Lawler Foundry in Birmingham, Alabama. The structure itself is a steel frame with a concrete deck.
